Spent some time this weekend at the Old Diphtheria Cemetery in Wisconsin. Not much to say, really. It's just a cemetery. Supposedly, a lot of people died of Smallpox and Diphtheria back in the 1800s. The tour guide went on about how these diseases took a toll on everyone, but honestly, it all kind of blends together after a while.
The cemetery is located on a hill surrounded by trees. I walked up there, and yeah, the energy was supposed to be intense or whatever. I felt a bit of sadness and loss, but it wasn’t anything I hadn't felt before. There were families buried together, siblings who died young, and it’s sad, sure. But, you know, it’s just part of history, right?
They say the spirits of children linger there, but they didn’t seem too bothered by their situation. Just hanging around, I guess. The gravestones look old and weathered, which is kind of what you’d expect in a place like this. The trees around the cemetery are big and old too, supposedly protecting the graves or something. One tree was called the Mamma Tree, and it was supposed to be all loving and beautiful. Not that I really felt that.
Some people left flowers and trinkets at the gravesites. I guess that’s nice. It’s kind of amazing that after all this time, people still come to pay respects. But honestly, it felt like a lot of buildup for something that just... was.
Next time we’re in the area, we might come back and try to help those spirits cross over, or whatever. If they want to stick around, that’s on them. I’ll probably think about this place for a while, but mostly I just feel... indifferent.
Anyway, that was my weekend.
