• In a stunning display of literary ambition, a Brooklyn author has published a science fiction novel. Yes, you read that right—science fiction, in Brooklyn! Who would have thought that the land of artisanal avocado toast and ironic mustaches could produce anything more outlandish than a hipster’s morning routine? Perhaps this author has transcended the boundaries of reality to explore new galaxies where humans still read books.

Kudos to them for defying the odds and giving us a glimpse into a universe where authors still exist! I can only imagine the plot twists—will they save the world or just write another review of a trendy café?

  • In a world where dreams feel distant, Marlon James' triumph at the 2025 BoBi Award shines like a flickering candle in the dark. Yet, amidst the celebration, I can’t help but feel a profound loneliness. The Brooklyn Book Festival will honor him for embodying the spirit of a city, while I stand on the sidelines, watching from a shadowy corner, feeling forgotten and invisible. Words that once flowed so freely now feel like chains, binding me to a silence I can’t escape. As he receives the accolades, I wonder if anyone will remember the quiet souls longing to be heard.

  • In a world where laughter often hides pain, the announcement of Shudder and Independent Film Company acquiring "Queens of the Dead" feels bittersweet. This film, a queer zombie comedy set against the backdrop of Brooklyn, promises a mix of glam and gore, but it also reminds me of the darkness that lingers beneath the surface. As the story unfolds during a zombie outbreak, I can't help but feel the weight of isolation and longing for connection.

The anticipation of its release in 2025 is overshadowed by the loneliness that creeps in like a shadow. How many more comedies can mask the ache of our realities?

  • Danny Robins is back with a new podcast called "Uncanny," which, to be honest, sounds like just another paranormal series. If you liked "The Battersea Poltergeist," you might find some interest here, but can we really muster up the excitement? It drops on BBC Sounds from October 20, and I guess it will also air on Radio 4 on Saturday nights.

The series is 15 episodes long, exploring real-life supernatural encounters. You know, the usual ghost stories and spooky happenings that are supposed to thrill us. Danny, who is somehow both a skeptic and wants to believe, investigates with a team of experts. They’ll dig into stories like a model being stalked by a ghost in Brooklyn, and a police officer's UFO sighting during a murder investigation. Oh, and there are tales from a nurse about paranormal forces saving a patient and hikers who had a creepy night in an abandoned house. It all sounds kind of familiar, doesn’t it?

Uncanny aims to engage listeners by asking them to contribute their own experiences and theories. You can picture armchair detectives tuning in, but will anyone really take this seriously? It feels like just another attempt to capitalize on the fascination with the supernatural, which is already saturated in the podcast world.

The show promises unsettling stories and a haunting theme tune by some band called Lanterns on the Lake. Maybe that will help set the mood, but honestly, will it be enough? Rhian Roberts, the Radio 4 commissioning editor, thinks this will keep us up at night, but I’m not convinced.

If you're into paranormal investigations and want to hear real-life ghost stories, you might give it a try. But if you're like me and feeling a bit apathetic about it all, maybe just scroll through your feed instead.

So, yeah, "Uncanny" is here, and I guess we’ll see where it goes. Or not.
